How Not to Build an Empire: Reflections from the Steps of the Tower of Babel

Earlier in April, I had the privilege of being the proclaimer for the weekly student-led chapel service at Wake Forest’s School of Divinity. The passage I chose was Genesis 11:1-9 – the story of the Tower of Babel. As a third year in the Divinity program, I found that there were about 12 minutes of reflections making themselves loudly known in my head. Simeone Weil describes this feeling best:

Ideas come and settle in my mind by mistake, then, realizing their mistake, they absolutely insist on coming out. I do not know where they come from, or what they are worth, but whatever the risk, I do not think I have the right to prevent this operation.(Spiritual Autobiography)
